In yesterday’s cif tennis semi finals, our lady Lions fought valiantly but eventually succumbed to woodcrest Christian with a score of 7-11. Good Morning Lions!   R – Read and write daily.   In yesterdays tennis quarterfinals, our ladies upset #4 seed La Salle, to secure a seat in the semi finals of the Division 5 CIF tournament. A nail biter through and through, it came down to the very last match. With nerves of steel, senior captain megan chow was able to pull out the set win for a final victorious score of 10-8. Good job Megan, Taina, Vanessa, Christina, Tramie, Vina, Daniela, Ngan and Caroline. Good luck Wednesday against #1 seed Woodcrest Christian.   On Saturday at the Big Orange Classic held at Riverside Community College the Entertainment Unit took Second Place with a First Place in Visual Effect, Our Color Guard also took second place and our Drum Line took First Place. On Friday a team of MERITS students went to UCLA to compete in the final round of UCLA’s nanovation shark tank science innovation business pitch competition. After a lightning quick pitch and 10 minute grill session, and a nervous hour sitting through their competition, our lions rose victorious, claiming first place, and $2000 cash prize. Concert Choir received a ‘excellence in performance’ and Abbey Singers received a ‘gold rating’ and the highest score of the festival. Good Morning Lions!   E – Engage in school culture.   In yesterday’s Track and Field Action our Lions clawed up the Panthers in a very one sided battle. The Girls JV won 95-9. Boys F/S won 93-1 and boys JV 79-40. The Girls varsity saw a 84-15 win with victories by Alexa Perez, Jacklynn Tran, Evelyn Fuentes, Winnie Nguyen, Carolyn Putman, Sophia Nguyen and Jasmine Do. The Boys varsity completed the sweep 81-45 with wins by Jordan Tran, Alex Aguliara, Omar Garcia, Oscar De Leon, Richard Nguyen, Jason Pham and Kevin Torres. Great job Lions!   Shout out to the Varsity badminton team as they dominated Marina 21-0 and Cypress High 17-4 this week! The team is also ranked in the top 10 by the CIF Southern Section Committee! Good Morning Lions!   D – Demonstrate digital literacy.   The WHS Library now has four new big, beautiful computers each with a scanner! They have the complete Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office. Come in and try them out.   Attention Spanish-speaking students! If you plan to enroll in Spanish or Español classes, you are required to take a placement exam. Placement exams will take place in room F8 at lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays. If you are already in an Español or Spanish class this semester, you don’t need to come. Good Morning Lions!   P – Prepare for college and career.   Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Last weekend on Friday at Nogales HS our JV color guard placed 2nd and our Varsity guard placed 3rd in their divisions. And on Saturday our drum line qualified in the top 24 groups in SoCal and got 11th place and the Varsity guard placed 2nd at Rancho Cucamonga, Great Job Lions1   The spirit week competition continues tomorrow! Represent your own culture tomorrow! The top two 4th period classes with the highest percentage of spirit week participation will get a root beer float party!   This weekend our JV guard got 3rd and our varsity got 4th, beating Fountain Valley again at the Valencia HS show and on Sunday the drum line seated in 11th place at semi-finals moved up to 7th place at CSU San Bernardino. We are still waiting on results of the district contest against the other high schools in HBUHSD, but the winners of our WHS contest are the 4th periods from Mr. Griggs with 3,281 cans and Mr. Cain with 1,718 cans. An honorable mention goes out to the 4th periods from Ms. Shehadeh with 1,171 cans and Ms. Griffin with 392 cans. Thank you, Lions for your donations for our community! The Southern California All-star game saw Kelly Almazan, Shaylah Winterfeld and Vanessa Campos play for coaches Boyd and Shorty and represent the winning side with a 2-0 score. Vanessa scored a goal and had an assist and she was named the games Most Valuable Player. Congratulations Lions!   This weekend at different sites our drum line and varsity color guard competed at WGI Power Regionals. Good Morning Lions!   E – Engage in school culture. In yesterday’s Track and Field action our throwers were on fire getting the upper hand on visiting Santa Ana. The Track meet came down to the final relay with the boys varsity and Frosh Soph winning the final race and the meet. Each other level was quite close coming 2 points short of victory. Nice job Lions!   In yesterday’s badminton action, our Varsity lions defeated Kennedy High School with a score of 19-2 led by Sheila La and Christine Nguyen. Our varsity and jv lions overpowered the centurions with a score of 17-4. Good Morning Lions!   I – Inquire and collaborate.   In yesterday’s game of the week, the Varsity Badminton team smashed the Saxons of Loara 21-0! While the JV team also winning 15-0! Both levels are 2-0 going into today’s match against top ranked Diamond Bar. In last night’s Soccer action our girls went up to the Fresno area and defeated this year’s division 4 CIF Champion Kingsburg. In a classic game the Lions fell behind before Sarah Ralston broke the school record in scoring her 17th goal of the season. The game remained tied through overtime until the Lions scored penalty kicks by Sarah, Kelly Almazan, Vanessa Campos, Zoe Sarun and the game winner by Zaydee Solis. In Saturday’s Track and Field action 26 schools squared off for the Earl Engman Relays and our Lions had quite a day. Our boys Shot Put team came in 1st place and the rest of the team brought home a total of 58 medals with the distance crew bringing home the most. The highlight of the day was our girls team winning the 2nd place trophy. Great job! The girls Soccer team would like to thank the hundreds of students, faculty and administration for all of their support this year and throughout the playoffs. Seeing you all brave the rain at the CIF Championship was truly awesome. Although we were only the “CIF Runner’s Up” we will head out to Kingsburg High School tomorrow for a chance at the State title instead, with maybe one more chance at South Pasadena. Good Morning Lions!   I – Inquire and collaborate.   Congratulations to the JV freshman and JV baseball team. Both teams beat Orange High in their first league game. Christian Bedolla threw a complete game giving up only 1 earned run. He also has 4 strikeouts. Anthony Morales went 2 for 4 and had 1 run scored. The freshman won 19-2 on the arm of Vincente Avalos’ 5 innings pitched. Isaac Bueno hit 2 more home runs and had over 6 runs batted in. The Aztec Eagles had scored 100 goals on the year and gave up only 5 until meeting the Lions and their huge crowd. Good Morning Lions!   I – Inquire and collaborate. Congradulations to our Lady Lions basketball program who sweaped the Seahawks last night at Ocean View. It ended with an exciting varsity game who pulled out a nail bitter. It was a total team effort with three player scoring in double figures; Nyla Bivens with 13, Kianna Garcia with 11, and Krystal Medina with 11. Krystal’s last 2 points broke the 60-60 tie and put the lions up for good with 1.3 seconds left. Good Morning Lions!   R – Read and write daily. Over the weekend your boys frosh soph soccer team advanced to the semi finals of the competitive Saddleback High School Soccer Tournament. They defeated Trabuco Hills 7-0, a Sophomore dominated Santa Valley 3-2 and played amazing soccer in the semi finals vs a all sophomore Portola team Goals scored by Jesus Madera, Jerry Merino, Gustavo Centurion, Joseph Marquez, Cesar Pelon, Angel Garcia and 2 by David Bui! We had 89 fabulous donors make it onto the bus and we were able to collect 65 usable pints of blood. This during a time of great need! Good Morning Lions!   D – Demonstrate digital literacy.   Boys Basketball swept the Santa Ana Saints yesterday. Boys Varsity won 66-30 to go 1-0 to start Goldenwest League Play. Ryan Phung and Roy Mao led the team in scoring with 15 and 12 points respectively. But Joshua Lee got the party started with 2 first quarter Dunks. Two goals were scored by Joseph Manriquez, one by Danny Tran and another by Jordi Escobar. It was a great effort by all the boys   The 411 on Girls Soccer is that they are actually 4-1 and 1. Good Morning Lions!   I – Inquire and collaborate.   Hey Seniors! Are you ready for College Application Day on November 14th? On this day, all seniors will have the opportunity to complete at least one college application during school hours. Check your student email for the survey form. If you are applying to a CSU or UC, get a head start by attending the after school workshops in the Staff Dining Room on Thursday, November 9th. We will have snacks and lots of help available.   Attention all lions! Everyone is encouraged to send pictures into Yearbook throughout the school year. The earlier you turn them in, the greater your chances will be to be featured in YOUR yearbook! Good Morning Lions!   R – Read and write daily. All great things eventually come to an end. In yesterday’s tennis action, our lady lions played valiantly against 2nd ranked Temecula Canyon but unfortunately were not able to pull out another upset falling 7-11 to end our season. Daniela Gomez, Christina Nguyen, Vina Pham, Stacy Do, Nancy Ngo earned 2nd team all league Vy Pham and L-C Garcia earned first team all league and Mighty Tiny Megan earned League MVP. Good Morning Lions!   P – Prepare for college and career.   Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. In fridays tennis action, our lady lions pulled off another upset, defeating 7th ranked Aquinas to reach the quarterfinals of CIF. Doubles Stacy Do Ilse Garcia Vy Pham Christina Nguyen Daniela Gomez Vina Pham and Singles Megan Chow swept all their sets to win 12-6. Good job ladies and good luck in todays match. In Friday’s Football action our varsity completed the 3 game sweep with a 48-21 win at Loara. Noah Melbon was 100% on his passing with a touchdown to Joel Navarro and 3 to Chris Samilton. Dennis Ly and Christian Jaime scored on the run and Juan Rivera and Marco Aburto shared 6 extra points. Highlights included an interception by Waihin Soe and a 25-yard touchdown by Paul Kalix. Good Morning Lions!   E – Engage in school culture. In JV Football action our Lions pounded the visiting Saxons as Keoni Sierra rushed for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns as Justin Grey and Henry Nguyen combined for 251 yards passing with touchdowns to Jordan Tran, Jose Diaz and Ethan Phan. All other points were scored by Marco Aburto and Emilio Davalos.   Hey SWAG winners– the names of all SWAG winners for October were put into a drawing and four of you have won again. Congratulations to Ixchel Juarez, Emily Nguyen, Andy Nguyen, and Manuel Mora. Please come to G-1 to pick up your Lion Spirit Wear prize. In yesterday’s CIF rumble in the artic, our lady lions tennis team brought the heat to tenth ranked rim of the world. in a back and forth slug fest, the final outcome was only determined in the last set’s. doubles vina pham and daniel gomez willed out a 7-5 win to sweep all their sets and most importantly clinch the winning set for a 10-8 overall win. good job to all the ladies and keep the momentum going for this friday’s cif match   All students are encouraged to be at Fountain Valley from 7-9pm Gym on November 8th to meet all the Universities, Cal States, Community Colleges and Technical Schools will be presented. Good Morning Lions!   E – Engage in school culture. Congrats to Lions water polo team braking a 5-5 tie in the 4th! From a time-out, Peter Vu scored on a pick play with Vince Martin. Peter Vuuuu scores 5 of the Lions 6 goals! John Moreno dominated the goalie position with 11 blocks, 3 assists and 3 key steals. Trenton Jones earned two assists. David Bui was locked in on defense! Great job Lions! Go get them today in your last game against Estancia at Costa Mesa at 5 PM.   In yesterdays goldenwest tennis semi final doubles L C Garcia and Stacy Do were able to upset the number one seed in a grueling 3 set marathon to claim a spot in CIF individuals. Unfortunately in the finals the ladies were unable work their magic losing by a hair in a second 3 set marathon. Still, good job ladies in CIF individuals next momth and to the emtire team in CIF team playoffs next week In last night’s Football action our varsity sent off their seniors in great style with a 21-7 win over Segerstrom
