When the Segerstrom Jaguars entered Westminster High School on Friday night, they stumbled upon a hundred students at Abbey Square eating hot dogs and chips, listening to music and having an all around great time.  Link Crew hosted the tailgate party, free for freshmen ($1 for everyone else), and ASB and Cheer were on hand to support.

The Jaguars had come to the Lions Den on Friday night to battle for the top spot in the Golden West League.  On paper, it was supposed to be a close game.  Both teams entered Friday with a record of 2-0 in conference play, and the Lady Lions scoring season average was only a little over 5 points better than the Jaguars.

“Segerstrom always plays us tough,” said a junior Lady Lions player going into the game.  The coaches were indeed expecting a tough game against their league rivals.  Coach Katz switched up the starting lineup again, showing the depth of his team.

The evening began with moving rendition of the National Anthem by this freshman in the WHS Vocal Music Program.

The Lady Lions won the tip and got off to the quick 2-0 lead, as they have the last few games.  The Lion Nation packed the Lions Den and watched silently as the Lady Lions scored their first 4 points.  The two teams traded baskets before Westminster hit a 3 and when the scoreboard quickly flashed 7 points the crowd erupted!  Streamers flew from the sky  and Lion Nation never stopped cheering!

The Lady Lions outscored the Jaguars 17-10 in the opening 8 minutes of action.  By the end of the first half the Lady Lions had doubled-up the score on Segerstrom and led 32-16.

The Lady Lions kept control of this game from the beginning, holding Segerstrom to fewer than 12 points in each quarter.  The Westminster defense held the Jags to just 11 field goals on the night, before taking the 19 point win.  The Lady Lions improve to 3-0 in conference play (14-4 overall) and the Jags fall to 2-1 (10-8).
