I wanted to share a brief article that discusses how the proposed SOPA and PIPA bills could affect libraries if passed.

I’m sure most of you are already pretty in the know on how damaging either of these bills would be, but this just further supports those concerns…

Also for those of you who haven’t seen it, this video does a great job explaining why these bills are so damaging…

Question of the Week

Why are all my library Strong School Libraries build strong studentsbooks due in January?

The WHS Library is now checking books out for three weeks or 15 school days instead of two weeks or 10 school days.  At the library we count only school days when calculating the due date so that means weekends and holidays do not count.

Why?  Our new online book catalog called “Destiny” www.whslions.net/library has a wonderful feature called Interlibrary Loans or (ILL).  Any student or staff member that has created an account in Destiny can borrow books from one of the other schools in the Huntington Beach Union High School District.  We changed our check out time to three weeks to make it easier for students and staff to borrow books from the other schools.

Stock up today for your winter break reading.

Let’s Explore: Book Blogs

What is a Book Blog?  A blog is a sort of online diary.  In this case it’s a book blog.  The author or authors of the blog talk about nothing but what books they have read.  Book blogs feature new books, book reviews, and even book trailers.  Within our school district one great blog is FVHS’S Baron book blog.  The new Blogspot format features a flipcard view that is really fun to look at and click on.  And the best part is you can put these books on hold.

Check it out at:

Another great list of young adult book blogs is the Young Adult Book Blog Directory.

Question of the Week

  • How can I help my school get a [Full-time] teacher librarian?

There are many ways that you can advocate for your school: become a member of the Site Council; join the PTA or other parent group; gather parents together to attend school board meetings;learn more about school libraries and how three moms in Washington State changed the legislative landscape for school libraries in that state; form a task force to advocate for school libraries in your town.
