It was quite a day as the Golden West League Wrestling finals were held at Santa Ana High. The Lions came in prepared to do their best and the results made that quite obvious as all 8 of our wrestlers finished in the top 3 of their perspective weight classes and advanced to CIF held, conveniently, at Westminster High School. The mighty Lions took 2nd place overall despite not having anyone in the heaviest 7 weight classes. As our top-ranked wrestler at the meet, Matthew Nguyen, made his way undefeated through the league becoming League champion at 106 pounds along with other league champions in Alex Godina (138 pounds) and David Garcia (148). Working their way to the championship round 2nd place finishers were Bryan Balderas (120) and Francisco Torres (132). Making the final CIF berths were 3rd place finishers Caoilte Drury (113), Dat Bui (126) and Luis Rizo (152). Meanwhile, at the girls’ CIF Master’s meet held at Roosevelt High in Corona, Aine Drury (137) pinned all 5 of her opponents to become the CIF Master’s champion and qualifying for the state finals next week in Visalia. This was a great day to be a Lion on the mat…stay tuned for next week’s results.
