Essential AVID Practices

Organize a 1.5-inch 3-ring binder, recommended 2 inches, for all academic classes and ensure it is with you daily.
Use an agenda and backward plan to manage your time effectively.
Take focused notes and actively engage with the materials in all academic classes daily.
Participate in AVID tutorials to enhance your learning and understanding.

Grades and Attendance

Maintain excellent attendance to maximize your learning opportunities. No more than 15 truancies per semester.
Be present and actively participate in your classes.
If you receive a D or F grade, remediate those grades immediately.
Be A-G eligible with grades of C or better.

Minimum of 2.00 GPA by the end of your 9th grade year.
Minimum of 2.50 GPA by the end of your 10th grade year.
Minimum of 2.75 GPA by the end of your 11th grade year.

Leadership

Positively interact with others and set a good example of behavior inside and outside of school.
Use social media responsibly and respectfully, ensuring that your online presence reflects well on Westminster High School and the AVID program.
Submit your OWN work. No academic dishonesty.
Refrain from engaging in any inappropriate behaviors, including the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

CONSEQUENCES

The AVID program has a two-strike system (unless the offense is excessive). The first offense will result in signing a probationary contract by both you and a parent.

If the offense(s) are from category 1 and 2, you will have one semester to fix those issues.
If the offense(s) are from category 3, you may be removed from the program if ANY area from category 1 and 2 are not met. (Ex. If you are placed on probation for abusing social media and then your grades falter the following year the AVID elective team may remove you from the program if it is deemed you cannot finish the A-G requirements.

DROPPING A.V.I.D.

AVID is a year-long commitment. Students requesting to be dropped from the program must start this process the year PRIOR during the initial scheduling in your English classes; which begins in February. In addition, the student MUST schedule a virtual parent meeting with Mr. Dykes> to discuss exit from the program.
