WHS OCAD Team Shines at State Decathlon Competition

Last weekend, the WHS OCAD team traveled to Santa Clara, CA to compete at the state level for the 18th consecutive year. Our students have been studying since June 2023 to prepare for the 10-event competition, with this year's theme being "Technology and Humanity". The top-scoring schools from each region are invited to attend, meaning that competition is fierce and a mere 10 points becomes a factor in whether or not students receive an award.

Ms. Đồng and I are proud to say that our Lion Decathletes represented not only our school, but Orange County as well, by earning a total of 10 individual awards along with a 3rd place team award for Super Quiz! The individual awards are as follows:

Kelly Ninh (3rd Year in OCAD, Senior)
  • Essay, Gold
  • Interview, Silver
  • Top Scoring Decathlete on team
  • K Club, Score > 7K
Christian Tapia (2nd Year in OCAD, Senior)
  • Literature, Silver
Fisher Ngô (1st Year in OCAD, Junior)
  • Essay, Gold
  • Literature, Bronze
  • Social Science, Gold
  • Third place overall in GPA category
Daniel Lopez Somadossi (1st Year in OCAD, Senior)
  • Economics, Bronze
Special thanks to the incredible subject coaches for assisting the decathletes in their endeavors, for all the generous donations that have come our way, and to Peter Đỗ for giving up his weeked to chaperone with us. Lastly, thank you to Anthony Marin, Trinh Võ, and Andres Reyes for joining us on the trip and serving as student volunteers/proctors. The team's achievements would not be possible without all of your support, so THANK YOU!

Please congratulate Kelly Ninh, Danny Nguyễn, Jennifer Huỳnh, Linda Nguyễn, Nicholas Nguyễn, Christian Tapia, Fisher Ngô, Daniel Lopez Somadossi, and David Rojas when possible. We are so proud of them for representing WHS at State!

Please also congratulate the entire OCAD team for participating in a great season this year and for being flexible as we navigated the first year of having OCAD as an elective course. We could not be more proud of their effort, dedication, and teamwork.
