Teachers of the Year!

The Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) has identified its 2022-2023 Teachers of the Year – Westminster High School’s (WHS) Huy Pham and Valley Vista High School’s (VVHS) Brandon Futagaki!

Each year, the district honors two outstanding teachers who exemplify dedication, practice effective instruction methods, and have an overall passion for the art of educating students.  This year’s teachers are no exception, as both Mr. Pham and Mr. Futagaki consistently go above and beyond for their students inside and outside of the classroom.

Mr. Pham diligently serves the Westminster Lions and has dedicated the last 15 years to teaching Biotechnology and AP Biology within the MERTIS (STEM) program. He challenges and supports his students daily as they explore the wonders of science. “The students flourish because of Mr. Pham’s outstanding teaching and creating access to cutting edge scientific opportunities and mentorships,” said Principal Amy Sabol.  “His dedication and selfless commitment to his students is an exceptional strength and one that makes honoring him a great privilege.”

For the past 16 years, Mr. Futagaki has been a teacher at Valley Vista High School. In that time, he has taught a wide range of classes based on students' interests and the school's needs. He currently teaches Health, PE, Weight Training, and Cinematic Arts. Over the last several years he has built a Weight Training program and a beautiful weight room that is well-loved by our students. Mr. Futagaki started by just offering students a place to work out and learn about health and wellness during their lunch. Over time, it eventually grew to be a formal class. Today, the course is taught in the bell schedule and in the after school credit recovery program, and it always has a long waitlist of students who are excited to take the class with Brandon.

“Brandon's personality and positive attitude are infectious. He is passionate about teaching the students at Valley Vista and working hard to ensure their success.” Principal Dr. Jessie Marion stated. “Brandon will literally do anything for the staff or students, and he truly represents what makes Valley Vista such a great place to be.”

These two teachers were surprised in their classrooms on Tuesday with the news that they have been selected as the Huntington Beach Union High School District’s Teachers of the Year. Both honored with high regard from their students, their principals, and district administration.

On any given day, both Mr. Pham and Mr. Futagaki truly embody the district’s important mission in educating, preparing, and inspiring students to change the world.
