Parent Involvement Policy

In compliance with federal and state requirements and in collaboration with our parents, Westminster High School has developed a parent involvement policy that establishes the framework of school-family-community partnerships.  This policy was created in collaboration with our ELAC. School Site Council then provided feedback from which the document was accordingly modified and then approved.  The parent involvement policy was then mailed to all parents of Westminster High School in Spanish, Vietnamese, and English and is on our school’s website in all three languages.

 

Westminster High School believes that a partnership between parents and school is essential for student success.

 

Westminster High School is committed to:

  • Implementing the requirements for parental involvement as describe in the law
  • Consulting with parents in planning and operating Title I programs and making decisions about how funding is used for parent involvement activities
  • Having a parent involvement policy and school-parent compacts that are developed together with parents
  • Including our school’s Parent Involvement Policy in our Single Plan for Student Achievement
  • Including full opportunities for participation by all groups of parents, including physical access and, to the extent practicable, in languages other than English
 

Westminster High School will take the following actions to support parental involvement and to accomplish the law’s requirements:

Involve parents in developing the Parental Involvement Policy
    • Work with the School Site Council, Title 1 families, PTSA, and ELAC to develop the policy


    • Westminster High School holds an annual Title 1 meeting where we discuss the requirements of Title 1 and parental rights to be involved in the program.  Our meetings are held in the evening

    • Present the policy annually to the above-named parent groups and make adjustments based on input.  These meetings are ongoing
Involve parents in school review and improvement
    • Utilize the various parent groups to participate in school review and to provide input for improvement
Westminster High School provides parents of Title 1 students with an explanation of the curriculum used at the school, assessments used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet
    • Include this information during regular parent meetings (Title 1, PTSA, School Site Council, and ELAC)


    • Provide this information on the school’s website


    • This information is covered for classes during Back to School Night


    • Information is covered during 8th grade parent night
If requested by parents of Title 1 students, Westminster High School provides opportunities for regular meetings that allow parents to participate in decisions relating to the education of their children
    • Westminster High School holds an annual Title 1 meeting


    • Westminster High School holds multiple ELAC meetings a year

    • PTSA and School Site Council meets monthly

  • Principal’s Coffee meetings are held monthly

Westminster High School provides Title 1 parents with assistance in understanding the State’s academic content standards, assessments, and how to monitor and improve the achievement of their children

    • Recruit Title 1 parents to participate in the LCAP committee where this information is covered multiple times a year

Westminster High School provides Title 1 parents with materials and training to help them work with their children to improve their children’s achievement
    • Westminster High School started a parent prep academy where they take classes to help them gain access to their student’s education.  Parents learn how to use email, the parent portal systems. They also have access to literacy courses and courses to help them work with their teenage children

    • Westminster High School encourages parents to attend the district’s Parent University workshops

    • Westminster High School provides computers for parents to use and has translation services in the office to help parents access our resources.

    • Update our school’s website with information for parents
With the assistance of Title 1 parents, the school educates staff members about the value of parent contributions and how to work with parents as equal partners
    • Westminster High School offers a Passport to Success night where families meet with staff members to discuss their children’s progress in school, course selection, etc.

    • Parents and staff members are included in different group meetings (Title 1, ELAC, and School Site Council)

  • Include information during staff meetings that emphasizes the importance of working with parents
Westminster High School coordinates and integrates the Title 1 parental involvement program with other programs
    • Westminster High School shares information about programs with parents through its Title I office.

    • Westminster High School has a weekly newsletter and information about programs is shared in the newsletter

  • Information about other programs is shared at all parent meetings (Title 1, ELAC, School Site Council, and PTSA)
Westminster High School ensures that all communications to parents are provided in an understandable format, translated into our three primary languages
    • We have increased the number of bilingual staff members on our campus to interpret/translate information

    • Phone messages that go home to families are done in the languages our families speak

    • Important information that is put out on some social media sites is also in the languages our families speak

    • Westminster High School provides computers for parents to use and has translation services in the office to help parents access our resources.

    • We have a process for teachers to get assistance in calling home to families that speak a language different from their own

    • Westminster High School has bilingual instructional aides to assist students and parents as needed

  • Westminster High School provides translators at every parent informational night
